That’s the Valley Votes banner in the far back corner!!
Well the campaign is officially in full swing today. The Chilliwack Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with their 2011 Business Conference hosted an All Candidates Meeting at the Coast Hotel.
Acclaimed Mayor Gaetz opened the session with a vigorous encouragement to all in attendance to exercise the freedom that we enjoy here, which is to get out and VOTE. She also commended the Chilliwack & District Real Estate Board’s Valley Votes campaign!
We have a very passionate, concerned and energetic slate of hopefuls in Chilliwack! 16 of the 20 candidates for council sat lined up across the whole front of the room. The most popular topic of conversation, as in many of the previous elections, was regarding the revitalization of the downtown. Three other topics put before the group were (paraphrased): What can the city council do to promote job growth in Chilliwack? How would they see balancing growth while still maintaining a community feel? and What would you suggest the council do to address the grow-op issue in our town? While there was general consensus on some points, a few very different ideas were presented.
It was a very good experience that certainly got me thinking. If you get a chance I encourage you to get yourself to at least one all candidates meeting. If that doesn’t fit into your busy schedule check back in here after October 26th to see the bios and some video interviews with the candidates!
The Valley Votes team has pulled off a miracle. We have secured a local legend and videographer extraordinaire to shoot our municipal candidates interviews. Matthew A. Hawkins has agreed to a 2 day session in which he will interview, videotape and edit those

who wish to have their voice heard. This is great news.
As you know, The Valley Votes website has been put together by volunteers to help support and encourage an increase in voting. We interviewed tons of local residents and found that most people simply didn’t know where to get information about those who are running in the elections. To that end we put together this website with the main focus being on a virtual all candidates meeting via video interviews. This is where Matt comes in.
Matt brings to the table years of video experience. He is an award winning director and producer and enjoys being part of the creative process. He has won two nation awards, one with Ford and Cineplex and the other with Discovery World HD, not to mention his honourable mention with a Vancouver Canucks video contest. His company, Hawkins Media, exists to share your product, message and business with the world. We at The Valley Votes team are very excited to have Matt on board. You can learn more about Matt and his company on his website by clicking on the following link: http://www.matthewahawkins.com/
The final day for the candidates to declare is October 14th. We have hired Matt for October 17th and 18th to shoot the interviews. If you are running in this years election please let us know. We will send you a letter explaining the purpose of The Valley Votes website and set up a time for your interview. The interview is all about you. There is no hidden agenda, no staged questions, it’s simply a way for you to express yourself to the public via social media. If you decide against the video we are more than happy to have a picture of you on the site with your bio.
We want to know what on your mind! On November 19th, 2011 we will cast a vote electing people to run our city. These people will evaluate different proposals, educate themselves on current issues and in the end forge our direction for the next 3 years.
So again, we want to know what’s on your mind. What are some burning issues you think the city needs to look at in the future?
To get the ball rolling let’s name a few topics:
1. Who would like to see a casino open up in Chilliwack? Why or why not?
2. Would you support a train system linking Chilliwack to Vancouver? Why or why not?
3. What can be done about the downtown area? How should the city be involved?
4. What is the city’s long term plan for reducing crime?
Let’s hear from you. When we know what the public is thinking we can take your questions to the candidates for an answer.
